The cosmetic effect of missing teeth can be corrected with dental implants; however, a simple one-step dental implant procedure might not work for everyone.

Dental implants require good jaw support in order to fully function and thrive. In people with a defective bone foundation, dental implants simply don’t work as well.

Bone grafting is a technique that strengthens the bony support for your implants and gives you back your natural, beautiful smile.

What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure where the surgeon takes a section of a bone from another part of your body and transfers it to jawbone. Sometimes a special biological bone grafting material is used instead of your actual bone.
This is an extensive procedure which takes months to show results. Once the bone has been grafted into your jawbone, you will likely have to wait several months before a dental implant can be fixed.

This buffer time is given for the grafted jawbone to gain its full potential and strength, thus ensuring that it will provide a sturdy support base for the dental implants.

Once the jawbone is strong enough, a formal dental implant procedure can be carried out.

Care After Surgery

Special care needs to be taken after the new bone has been grafted into your jaw, and after the implants have been placed.

After the surgery, you may feel some discomfort; simple over-the-counter painkillers will help alleviate the pain. You should also stick to a soft diet and clear liquids for the first couple of weeks. Tobacco smoking can delay healing and cause an implant and graft to fail, therefore you should strictly avoid smoking altogether.

Some warning signs to look out for are:

  • Swollen gums and teeth
  • Bruises on the skin around your mouth
  • Bruises in the gums
  • Bleeding from the gums
  • Unusual pain in the gums or jaws.
